Dermal Fillers Q & A

What how do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers add volume to your face or other areas where it's lacking. Some of the most popular areas for dermal filler injections are:

  • Nasolabial folds: in the two nose-to-mouth grooves in the face
  • Cheeks: in the upper and middle cheek areas
  • Lips: in lip borders and inner lips
  • Neck: in neck rings
  • Hands: any sunken areas on hands

Dr. Elliott uses different dermal fillers for each area because each dermal filler works best in certain places.

What are the different options in dermal fillers?

Foxhall Dermatology offers three categories of dermal fillers, and each has its own unique benefits.

Hyaluronic acid fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers are a synthetic duplicate of the hyaluronic acid existing in the body naturally. The hyaluronic acid fillers include Juvéderm and Restylane.

Both Juvéderm and Restylane have a full product line, with different formulas for different parts of the face. For example, Restylane Lyft® and Juvéderm Voluma® are ideal for midface use and can last for 18 and 24 months, respectively.

For nasolabial folds, Juvéderm Vollure and Restylane Lyft® can last up to 18 months. For lip enhancement, Dr. Elliott may recommend Juvéderm Volbella® for a subtle change or Juvéderm XC® for a significant change. Both can last up to a year in lips. Results are instant.

Calcium microspheres

Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite injectable gel, is a synthetic copy of a mineral existing in the bones and teeth naturally. These calcium microspheres last for up to a year. Radiesse is a good choice for the nasolabial folds or filling in acne scars. Sometimes, it's also used for hand rejuvenation. Radiesse results are instant.

Poly-L-lactic acid

Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid filler that works differently than other fillers. Instead of immediate results, you'll see a steady improvement in volume over time, with optimal results at around three months after treatment. Sculptra is best suited for the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and eye hollows. It's also part of some neck rejuvenation procedures. Sculptra can last for up to two years.

Dr. Elliott will help you choose the right filler for your situation.

Do dermal filler work well with other treatments?

Yes, dermal fillers can work well with other treatments like Botox®. If you have several concerns, you may even be able to have the treatments during the same appointment.
