Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Mohs Micrographic surgery is a type of surgery appropriate for basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas and occasionally melanomas.  It is used for tumors that have recurred, are large, have margins that are indistinct, or are in difficult anatomic locations.  In this procedure the tumor is taken out and immediately examined under the microscope.  The surgery is done “in stages” during which the surgeon removes the visible tumor and then checks it microscopically.  Between 1 and 3 stages are required for most tumors.  Using this procedure the surgeon can be sure that the entire tumor is removed and that as much normal skin as possible is preserved.
